Plein Air Painting Workshop at Drumnaph Nature Reserve
There is something special about painting outdoors. The changing light, the sounds of nature and the opportunity to slow down and really observe the landscape, all create a completely different creative experience. That was exactly the focus of my recent plein air painting workshop at Drumnaph Nature Reserve, where a wonderful group of beginner artists came together to spend a morning immersed in nature.
Set within the Drumnaph Nature Reserve set at the foot of the Sperrin Mountains, one of Northern Ireland's beautiful woodland reserves, the workshop encouraged participants to step away from the distractions of everyday life and reconnect with the landscape through painting. Whether people had years of experience or were picking up a paintbrush for the first time, everyone was welcome and received guidance where needed.
Throughout the session we explored how to simplify the landscape into colour, shape and texture rather than trying to paint every detail. I shared techniques for observing light, building confident compositions and using expressive brush marks to capture the feeling of a place rather than creating a literal representation.
One of the most rewarding parts of the day was watching each participant develop their own interpretation of the surroundings. Although everyone painted from the same location, every piece reflected a unique perspective and personality. It was a reminder that creativity isn't about perfection - it's about noticing, responding and enjoying the process.
As an artist inspired by the Irish landscape, these workshops are some of my favourite events to host. They combine my love of painting with my passion for helping others discover the wellbeing that creativity and spending time outdoors can bring.
